Nosferatu - Google Video

Nosferatu (1922)

Originally released in 1922 as Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie Des Grauens, director F.W. Munarau's chilling and eerie adaption of Stoker's Dracula is a silent masterpiece of terror which to this day is the most striking and frightening portrayal of the legend.

Here's a treat for all silent horror film fans. Google has the video in Flash, and you can download as well. If you haven't seen it, it's not your average vampire movie. For one thing, the creature is just that, a creature. Nothing suave and sexy about him, like you find in later movies. Younger audiences might not have the tolerance for a silent film, as there isn't the fast paced camera editing common in "modern" films, but I think they're great. Some of them anyway. I have this one somewhere on VHS, and now have the urge to dust it off, grab some snacks, and travel back to a dark and gloomy age of superstition that kept people from traveling, after dark.

This film was almost lost forever when Bram Stokers' widow sued to have the film destroyed because of copyright infringement. It was obviously a film adaptaion of Stokers' Dracula, produced without permission. Fortunately for us, some copies escaped and continue to haunt us to this very day.

You can also view or download the movie from The Internet Archive, which may be a better choice if you're on dialup, since they have links for both dialup and broadband.

If you need some info on the film you can start at Wikipedias' article
